Quartersawn & Rift - Oak Flooring - Quarter Sawn White Oak Lumber

Our quarter sawn white oak lumber is created from responsibly harvested timber, dead fallen and dead standing trees, also from recycled old large logs and white oak beams that that were used in the early construction of antique barns and old buildings.

quartersawn, quarter sawn oak
White oak lumber that is quarter sawed is often described as some of the most beautiful sawn wood in the world. No other wood in the world has the long radiated rays that are needed to create this spectacular rich "tiger striped" or "fleck" look often crafted for used in high end homes and prime cabinet, flooring and furniture  construction.

The art of quarter sawing, or quarter sawn like many superior practices of the past, has been replaced with plain sawing techniques that are easier, cheaper, and quicker, but produce more lower grade lumber

Gustav Stickley, perhaps the greatest woodworker America has ever seen, used quartersawn white oak almost exclusively for his Mission and Arts & Crafts furniture.

Quarter sawn hardwood is produced when the log is cut radially at a 90-degree angle to the growth rings. This produces boards with very straight, tight grain and it's absolutely ideal for fine flooring and furniture building.

The cut is not very economical, so the price of the stock is higher. Rays or flake, which show up as golden ribbons crossing the grain in oak, are a prized attribute of quartersawn lumber.

Our lite rustic quartersawn rift white oak floor is shown.
